For developers and enthusiasts eager to experiment with the Forgotten Realms.

I’ve been getting a lot of questions from other developers and GIS enthusiasts asking for access to the Toril GIS data. Because the interest is there, I am publishing a raw, automated export of the developer database in GeoJSON format.

Before you dive in, I need to be perfectly candid: this is a Work In Progress.

If you are looking for a beautiful, finished, plug-and-play interactive map—please wait. This release is absolutely not that. These files are being shared strictly for experimentation, getting familiar with the project architecture, and testing. Do not let this raw data dump form your impression of the final product. The database schema changes, data is incomplete, and many features are unreviewed.

If you plan to poke around the data, you must read the Toril GIS Docs. The documentation is essential for understanding the flattened layer attributes, the localized naming conventions, and our specific coordinate system (including the Myth Drannor prime meridian shifts).

Project Status & Progress Update

Based on the latest automated snapshot from our PostGIS database, here is a quick look at where the project currently stands:

  • Canon Accuracy is 100%: Across all exported layers—from global boundaries to individual subterranean ruins—every single feature is successfully tied to an official canon source.

  • The Underdark is leading the charge: This is currently our most polished area. Populated places and important sites in the Underdark are fully mapped, with English and Russian localization both sitting at or above 90%. Description coverage is also strong here (78% for settlements).

  • The Surface geometry is massive, but semantics take time: The sheer scale of the surface is mapped out geometrically. We have over 2,000 land polygons, 1,200 rivers, and 1,000+ populated places in the database. However, semantic data entry is an ongoing marathon. English labeling for these features is currently hovering between 3% and 17%, and Russian localization is just beginning.

  • Global & Conceptual Layers: Global grids, time zones, and major surface regions are fully implemented and labeled in English.

You can find more detailed layer-by-layer metrics inside the _README.md file included with the export archive.

Grab the files, load them into QGIS or your favorite geospatial tool, and have fun experimenting. If you have GIS experience, a passion for Forgotten Realms worldbuilding, or just want to share feedback, feel free to join the Discussions section on GitHub.
