Contribute

If you’re interested in contributing — or in aligning your own GIS project with the Geospatial Grimoire ecosystem — reach out via the contact information on the About page.

The Geospatial Grimoire is an open, collaborative platform for building and exploring fictional worlds through geospatial data. It connects cartographers, GIS specialists, translators, designers, and lore enthusiasts who believe that imaginary landscapes deserve the same precision and care as real ones.

Our long-term goal is to support not just one world — but a constellation of interoperable GIS projects, each contributing to a shared cartographic multiverse.

Ways to Contribute

1. GIS and Data Contributors (priority) We’re looking for people with at least basic GIS experience (QGIS, PostGIS, or similar) who want to help build or maintain the geospatial foundations of fictional worlds. Tasks may include:

2. World Creators and Project Leads If you’re developing your own fictional setting, you can use the Geospatial Grimoire framework to create a GIS for it. We can provide guidance on data design and standards so your project can align with others — forming part of a coherent network of interoperable worlds.

3. Collaboration with Existing GIS Projects We also welcome partnerships with other open geospatial initiatives — fictional or real-world inspired. If you’re maintaining a similar project, we can work together on shared schemas, coordinate reference systems, or data exchange formats to build synergy across communities.

4. Lore and Context Specialists Writers, researchers, and worldbuilders can contribute by verifying geographical and historical accuracy within each setting. Your attention to lore and context helps ensure every map tells a story that makes sense.

5. Translators and Localization Editors As we expand into multiple languages, translators with a grasp of fantasy terminology are essential. You’ll help ensure consistency and cultural nuance in names, descriptions, and map labels.

6. Cartographic and UX Designers Artists and developers can refine map symbology, visual identity, and interface design — both for static cartography and web applications. Experience with QGIS, Inkscape, or libraries like OpenLayers or Leaflet is appreciated.

7. Documentation and Web Development Writers and web developers can improve contributor guides, technical documentation, and the website itself (built with Jekyll). Familiarity with Git/GitHub is helpful but not required.
