Toril Explorer
Status: In development — planned launch in 2026
Toril Explorer is an interactive web application built on top of the Toril GIS project. It aims to make the geography of the Forgotten Realms — especially the continent of Faerûn — accessible through an intuitive, browser-based interface.
Unlike the full Toril GIS database, which is designed for use in QGIS, Toril Explorer focuses on ease of navigation and exploration rather than editing or data analysis. It will allow users to:
- 🗺️ Explore detailed maps of Toril directly in the browser
- 🔍 Search for locations and view multilingual names
- 🧭 Toggle between thematic layers and regions (surface and Underdark)
- 📚 Access lore-based descriptions of geographic features
The goal is to provide an immersive, lightweight experience — no GIS software or downloads required.
Development
Toril Explorer is currently in early prototyping. The work is focused on:
- Designing the core map interface (based on OpenLayers)
- Connecting it with data served from Toril GIS
- Setting up multilingual map labels and search indexing
- Experimenting with smooth zooming and custom projections for Toril
The first public demo is expected in 2026, following the initial release of the Toril GIS dataset.
